Let’s take
a look at how the arrival of the new comic was advertised in IPC companion
papers. As was the tradition, other comics started making small noises about a
new sister publication by running half-page announcements a week in advance.
This one is from Whizzer and Chips dated 3rd March, 1973:
Big news
was dropped on the day when the first issue of Shiver and Shake
became available in the 'paper shops'. Companion comics ran a four page advertisement
on the centre pages. Here is how it looked in Whizzer and Chips
dated 10th March, 1973:
Two
different layouts of the advertisement were used to promote the second issue of
Shiver
and Shake and the free gift that came with it. Here is the ad from Buster
followed by one from COR!!, both
dated 17th March, 1973.
The third
issue and the free gift were promoted with a full page ad. This one is from COR!! dated 24th March, 1973:
Later on Shiver
and Shake ads appeared regularly in most IPC companion papers. Here
are some examples from Whizzer and Chips from 1973 and
1974:
I find this
plug particularly interesting because it was on the cover of another comic:
