In this annual Football Madd was illustrated by an
artist whom I don’t remember seeing anywhere else. I have to admit I am not
very well familiar with new British artists from the 80s:
There were four one-offs.
Artful
Artie was a version of Smartie
Artie – a strip that appeared in COR!! 1982 and 1984 annuals. Both
Arties were illustrated by the same artist. It was basically the same strip
with a variation of the name. Smartie
Artie appeared in two books and technically is not a one-off so it will be
covered separately (although frankly there’s little to cover – I don’t think
much of the stories or the artwork). Here is a sample page of Artful Artie:
Percy Grower and his Fantastic Fertiliser was an one-off by the artist who illustrated Benny Bendo – a regular
in COR!! Specials and Annuals. Does anyone know the artist’s name please?
The third one-off was Moose:
And last but not least, there was a set of Biffer, possibly
illustrated by Mike Brown:
As can be seen from the summary of the contents, Crocker contributed
and signed quite a large number of sets in this Annual. I can’t decide if he also
drew the episode of Val’s Vanishing Cream, here is the opening page:
Les Barton was back with more creepy humour of Fiends
and Neighbours, this time Mr Jones witnesses Mr. Really-Ghastly involved in
some serious BDSM action with his weird guests. Here’s a taste:
It looks to me as though Artful Artie is drawn by the character's namesake - Artie Jackson. I think the Val strip is indeed by Jim Crocker.
ReplyDeleteJim Crocker is by Val..
ReplyDeleteIts been really nice seeing all the Cor!! annuals and specials reviewed in detail...also seeing the odd characters..
I liked as a kid Benny Bendo..the way he stared and it bended..so look forward to your review on this soon..
Benny Bendo and the strip above is by the same artist as the Sparky comic's Willie Getaway 1971..also Sparky's Sam's snake and I Fly
ReplyDeletehttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Willie_Getaway
the artist is
Philip Millar
Are you sure the last Fiends & Neighbours strip was drawn by Nigel Edwards? It looks a lot more like Ian Knox' artwork to me.
ReplyDeleteIf you mean the episode in the last COR!! annual, you may very well be right. I will take a good look and update the post when I get the time, thanks!
DeleteI’m sure the Football Madd artist was the same one who drew Rotten Egghead for Whizzer & Chips, but who it is I don’t know. Seems like my next ‘mission’ at the British Library’s to look up this strip and see if the artist signed their name. I remember Egghead was in a W&C annual from the late 70s, so there’s a starting point. Could do with an A to Z like this: http://www.bustercomic.co.uk/a2z.html
ReplyDeleteStephen, I'd be interested to hear about the findings of your mission, when you get round to it. As for that A to Z, someone put the paper version of Steve Holland's and Ray Moore's Buster index 1960 - 1995 online without even crediting the researchers for their hard work...
DeleteThe ‘someone’ is quite obviously whoever created the website; and you’ve just pointed out the only flaw that otherwise excellent creation has.
ReplyDeleteSuccess! Found out in British Library today that it was Alan Rogers who drew Rotten Egghead between 16 Apr and 24 Sep 77, and it’s definitely the same artist who drew Mickey Madd for that one-shot. Not a bad way to spend the day!
ReplyDeleteThat "Football Madd" strip is by Nigel Maughan, he did a lot of stuff in Viz and all the other various Viz-like comics back in the 1980s and 1990s.
ReplyDeleteI bought the 1974 Corr! annual for my 7 year old daughter last year, I remembered every strip in it.
