welcome and enjoy!

Hi and welcome to my blog about comics from other people’s childhood! It is dedicated primarily to British humour comics of the 60s and 70s. The reason they are not from my childhood is simply because I didn’t live in the UK back then (nor do I live there now). I knew next to nothing about them until fairly recently but since then I’ve developed a strong liking for the medium and amassed a large collection, including a number of complete or near complete sets. My intention is to use this blog as a channel for sharing my humble knowledge about different titles, favourite characters and creators as I slowly research my collection.

QUICK TIP: this blog is a sequence of posts covering one particular comic at a time. The sequence follows a certain logic, so for maximum results it is recommended that the blog is read from the oldest post up.

BEANO, DANDY and TOPPER THIS WEEK in 1953

How about a gallery of the front covers of a few of the comics on newsstands this week all those years ago in 1953? The Topper was of course nearly twice the size of the other two. They are all brilliant as far as I am concerned :)

BLACK LOGO BEANOS FROM 1954

For a 7-issue stretch, Nos. 631 – 637 inclusive, in 1954 the Beano came with a black title logo. I’ve got no idea what prompted DC Thomson to carry out this brief experiment but the seven issues seem to have some extra appeal to collectors and are more difficult to come by. I have recently received the last missing issue of my “black-title-logo-run” and can now show the complete gallery of the covers. Whatever the colour of the logo, Dudley D. Watkins’ artwork is always nice to see:

FOOTBALL THEME IN BRITISH HUMOUR COMICS TO CELEBRATE EURO 2012 (DAY 3)

Angel Nadal drew a lot of football-themed Buster covers. Here is a nice sample:

Sub was one of the eight humour series in SCORCHER by Ken Reid from 1970 until 1974. The sample below is from the period when his Odhams career had ended and his work for IPC Magazines was limited to football strips in SCORCHER, until he started drawing Faceache in JET in the spring of 1971.

From Scorcher dated 7th March, 1970

I managed to find very few issues of The BEANO with football-themed covers, here is one by Dudley Watkins:
