welcome and enjoy!

Hi and welcome to my blog about comics from other people’s childhood! It is dedicated primarily to British humour comics of the 60s and 70s. The reason they are not from my childhood is simply because I didn’t live in the UK back then (nor do I live there now). I knew next to nothing about them until fairly recently but since then I’ve developed a strong liking for the medium and amassed a large collection, including a number of complete or near complete sets. My intention is to use this blog as a channel for sharing my humble knowledge about different titles, favourite characters and creators as I slowly research my collection.

QUICK TIP: this blog is a sequence of posts covering one particular comic at a time. The sequence follows a certain logic, so for maximum results it is recommended that the blog is read from the oldest post up.

GUEST APPEARANCES AT SCREAM INN - TIMOTHY TESTER

Time for the second guest appearance at Scream Inn that can be found in SHIVER AND SHAKE No. 52 cover-dated March 2nd, 1974.

This is quite an unusual example: firstly, it was in fact Scream Inn that appeared in another strip; secondly, the strip itself was a guest from Shiver and Shake’s sister comic: Timothy Tester ran for quite a while (1972 – 1979) in WHIZZER AND CHIPS. The illustrator and presumably the writer of Timothy Tester was Cliff Brown who lived not far from Scream Inn artist Brian Walker. In his interview for GOLDEN FUN fanzine (Winter 1979) Brian Walker said that Cliff would come over to Brian’s studio for a day each week and they’d go over the script of Scream Inn together. It looks like that week they spent more time together because the two pages below are clearly the result of a joint effort!

  1. What a great story...and a good advert for both comics and Cor!!

  2. Great to see the two artists drawing their own regular characters. Brian Walker later engaged in another collaborative project, this time with Barrie Appleby on a strip that ran on 5 occasions in Cheeky Weekly.

    1. That's a nice collaboration, I didn't know about it. It is interesting to see Brian Walker draw in a realistic style. I have a complete set of Cheeky Weekly but haven't got round to going through it thoroughly. Your excellent blog compensates for it :)

  3. I was never much of a fan of Timothy Tester. Give me Harry's Haunted House and Ginger any day.

  4. Tim’s last appearance was 6/10/79 - a week too soon for a slice of Whizzer & Chips' 10th birthday cake! Alas by this point reprints had been in place for a while, but he had a run few strips would complain about. The last story features PC Flatfoot having nightmares about falling foul of Tim’s testing innumerable times in the past. We hear him howl he can take no more; an appropriate if uncomfortable way to take our leave of Tim and co.
