welcome and enjoy!

Hi and welcome to my blog about comics from other people’s childhood! It is dedicated primarily to British humour comics of the 60s and 70s. The reason they are not from my childhood is simply because I didn’t live in the UK back then (nor do I live there now). I knew next to nothing about them until fairly recently but since then I’ve developed a strong liking for the medium and amassed a large collection, including a number of complete or near complete sets. My intention is to use this blog as a channel for sharing my humble knowledge about different titles, favourite characters and creators as I slowly research my collection.

QUICK TIP: this blog is a sequence of posts covering one particular comic at a time. The sequence follows a certain logic, so for maximum results it is recommended that the blog is read from the oldest post up.

HAPPY 100TH!

Today is the 100th anniversary of the birth of Ken Reid – one of Britain’s finest cartoonists and my favourite comics artist. Here’s Ken’s own ‘birthday card’ that he drew in his 1936 diary when he was 17 years of age.

What better way to celebrate the special day today than taking advantage of my Christmas Promotion and getting yourself the POWER PACK OF KEN REID books and free prints of his original artwork! Press here and claim your copies now!

KEN REID REPRINT BOOKS YEAR-END / XMAS PROMOTION!

This year marks Ken’s 100th birthday on December 18th.

To celebrate this special occasion, I am launching another year-end / Christmas promotion. Buyers of THE POWER PACK OF KEN REID! books will receive free A4 prints of Ken’s original artwork!

Vol. 1 (Frankie Stein + Jasper the Grasper) comes with a complete episode of Frankie Stein, cut in two halves:

Vol. 2 (Queen of the Seas + Dare-A Day Davy + The Nervs) comes with a complete episode of Dare-A-Day Davy, also cut in two halves. And that’s not just your regular episode, but the one with Ken’s self-portrait and his portrait of Walter Thorburn, the scriptwriter!

Those who order both books, will not only receive the four prints, but also TWO BONUS A4 prints of blown-up Dare-A-Day Davy panels with the portraits of the diabolical duo – Ken Reid and Walter Thorburn. That's a total of six free A4 prints!

You can order your copies from eBay or from my online shop here: https://www.kazoop-comics-shop.com/

The number of the prints is limited, so the offer stands until I run out of them. Be sure to get your orders in early to avoid delays in the postal Christmas rush!

QUEEN OF THE SEAS PANEL

Ken Reid was known to have sometimes been ‘text heavy’ in the strips that he scripted himself, making it necessary for editors to cut his writing down. Below is a nice example of that. The panel is from original Queen of the Seas artwork. I am not completely sure, but I believe I photographed it from the original piece owned by Peter Hansen:

The episode was printed in Smash! No. 31 (3rd Sept., 1966). The ugly colouring ruined the beauty of Ken’s linework,  but the reason I am showing the panel here is Captain Enoch Drip’s new speech balloon:

The Editor apparently thought Ken’s original version was too long, or eccentric…

This is how the panel looked in the reprint of the same episode in Buster cover-dated 8th July, 1972:

INDIEGOGO ORDERS FOR THE POWER PACK OF KEN REID FULFILLED ON SCHEDULE!

All orders for the POWER PACK have been shipped this morning, so if you supported my IndieGoGo crowdfunding campaign and are in the UK or the EU, expect a courier calling at your door sometime in the end of this week or early next week. The last POWER PACKS going to the USA, Australia, New Zealand and Canada will be posted tomorrow, and the supporters in those countries will receive their copies in a couple of weeks from now (depending on how quick the post office is).

Individual books are now available on eBay and directly from my online KAZOOP COMICS SHOP

If you want the limited edition box set with free artwork prints, or individual books with the free prints, IndieGoGo is still the place to get them – I have updated the FEATURED PERK in the column on the right by indicating the number of slipcase copies still available. The offer will expire in the first days of September, or when the few remaining copies are sold – whichever happens first. CLICK HERE TO GO STRAIGHT TO THE CAMPAIGN PAGE!

I have lined up a series of Ken Reid posts to appear on this blog over the next few months, including one or two things that I wanted but wasn’t able to include in the biography part of the collection, and a long string of posts covering the serialized stories of Faceache in BUSTER (i.e. the stories that continued for two weeks or more)…

In the meantime, here’s an image of the pile of THE POWER PACKS before they were off to their new homes this morning:
